1979年以一首《Longer》而引起全球歌迷注目的作曲家、吉他手兼歌手Dan Fogelberg,1951年8月13日生于伊利诺州(Illinois)的Peoria。自幼学习钢琴和夏威夷吉他，十四岁开始组织了乐队，后来又进一步学习作曲，为以后往歌坛发展做准备。
为了往歌唱圈发展，Fogelberg于1971年毅然放弃即将到手的伊利诺大学艺术系学士学位，开始他的歌唱事业，在民谣界闯出自己的一片天空后，移居加州，并追随Van Morrison到各地参加巡回演唱会。而引起名制作人Norbert Putnam的注意，1973年与哥伦比亚唱片公司签约，发行的第一张专辑《Home Free》成绩并不理想。随后转加入Epic唱片公司，第二张专辑《Souvenirs》于1975年推出后，佳评如潮，不但获得乐评家的赞赏，也获得商业上的成功，得到专辑排行第十七名。单曲《Part Of The Pain》得到第三十一名，Dan Fogelberg挤身进入美国知名作曲家兼歌手的行列。
1980年，专辑《Phoenix》将他带入个人事业的顶峰。这张由凤凰涅槃的传说带来灵感的作品，诞生了《Longer》，至今仍常被点播、传唱。其后的《The Innocent Age》又接连诞生了4首进入排行榜前20名的单曲。
